What Goose is great at

  • People. All of them. In eight years he has never bitten or tried to bite a person. He greets everybody like they came to see him.
  • Living in a house. House trained, crate trained, sleeps through the night, and he genuinely likes his crate. "Go to bed" sends him straight into it.
  • Being left alone. Nine or ten hours on a workday is no problem. No separation anxiety, no destruction, no howling.
  • Walks and trails. Good on leash. He spent years hiking off-leash on Austin trails and his recall is solid.
  • Knowing his words. Sit, lay down, come, stay, leave it, shake, go to bed.
  • Staying put. He does not climb fences, dig under them, or try to escape a yard.
  • The couch. World class. See photos.

The honest part, up front

What Goose needs

None of this is a surprise waiting for you at week three. Here it is now, so the right person can say yes with their eyes open.

  • He has to be the only pet

Goose guards food and high-value items, and he guards territory. He lived peacefully with another dog for years and has gotten along with housemate dogs before, but he has grown less tolerant with age, and earlier this year he bit the family's small dog over food and injured her. His family is not going to soften that. Inside a house, around other animals, Goose is unpredictable. The right home is one where he never has to share.

  • No indoor cats

He has been around cats and has never tried to hurt one. But if a cat runs, he will chase it, because to him that is a game. A house with indoor cats is not the right fit.

  • No young children who grab and pull

The only warning he has ever given a person was an air snap, no contact, when a small child grabbed and pulled on him. Older kids who understand how to leave a dog alone are fine.

  • Not a busy dog park dog

Outside the house he is a normal, friendly dog and meets other dogs politely on leash. Crowded dog parks are too much for him.

What he wants is a quiet house, a person of his own, a yard or a trail, and a couch. He is an easy dog who is simply done sharing.

His breed mix, in writing

Goose has an Embark DNA test, so there is no guessing. He is cur and hound right down to the bone, which is exactly why he looks the way he does and why his nose runs the show.

  • Mountain Cur 25.6%
  • Catahoula Leopard Dog 20.8%
  • American Leopard Hound 14.1%
  • Redbone Coonhound 6.5%
  • Bluetick Coonhound 5.6%
  • Supermutt 27.4%

Supermutt is Embark’s bucket for the older, more distant ancestry that does not resolve into one clean breed. The full report comes with him.

What he comes with

  • His crate, his bed, and his toys
  • Full vet records
  • Vaccines current
  • A dental cleaning done in September
  • Microchip, transferred to you
  • A full year of heartworm prevention
  • His beep-and-vibrate collar, which is how you get his attention on the trail when his nose finds something better than you
